School Holidays should not be longer than it is now

Over the past few years, debates on whether the school holidays should be lengthened have been raging globally with countless reasons favouring either side of the argument. However, the realistic solution is clear. The school holidays in Australia approximately last two weeks. This is plenty of time for students to recharge and rest, so why lengthen it even more? A longer holiday means more work to be done during the school days and more pressure on the students and it would be harder for students to adapt to the school environment again due to the extended time away from school. Going to school for less time is also not a good idea for individuals who do not do sports in the holidays, as attending school would give them a good amount of exercise during breaks. Therefore, school holidays should not be any longer than it is now.

Firstly, an extended school holiday means that work that is supposed to be done in the lengthened time will have to be crammed into the already-full school days, pressuring students even more, while parents and students persistently maintain that they need longer school holidays for the pressure on the children. As more complaints file in, the holidays will become longer and the situation worse. If the school holidays become extended, the only solution for the students' stress is to decrease the regular workload. However, this means that children would be getting less education because of the longer recess.

Furthermore, an extended break would make it increasingly difficult for students to adapt to the school environment after weeks of being away from school. This leads to decreased discipline and is detrimental to the focus of children during class times. Students will find themselves procrastinating regularly and not wanting to do their work, making a disastrous impact on their education. Their grades will also plummet along with their will to study. These effects can be simply prevented with a single solution: not extending the school holidays.

Lastly, being away from school would be unhealthy for children who do not participate in any sports during the holidays. For many students, when they are not at school, they tend to lie on their beds and only play video games. However, when they are at school, the majority of children take part in exercise and sports such as soccer, running, and other activities that engage in moving around. Although some children do partake in extra-curricular activities in the holidays, the additional movement would not hurt, especially for those who are bored during the break.

Many people yearn for longer school holidays including parents, students and teachers, especially while nearing the end of their break. The recess is often the most enjoyed time of the year. However, sometimes we have to think long-term and consider the impact on students' education. While an extended holiday would benefit the students' wellbeing, their education should also be prioritised. Due to these reasons, school holidays should not be longer than it is now.
